Catholic priest kidnapped on Ondo highway, abductors demand N20m

The Catholic Diocese of Ondo, on Tuesday, confirmed the abduction of one of its priests, Rev Fr Joseph Ajayi, by gunmen.

The gunmen were said to have abducted the priest along the Akure-Ikere Expressway on Monday.

It was gathered that the incident happened while the priest was travelling in his Toyota Corolla car.

According to a source, the cleric was travelling to Akure from Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti State, when the hoodlums struck and whisked him away.

It was learnt that the victim is a priest of the St Peter Clavar, Ilara Mokin in the Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Rev Fr Victor Ibiyemi, who is the Secretary to the Bishop of the Ondo Catholic Diocese, Most Rev Jude Arogundade, who confirmed the incident, said the abductors had contacted the church and demanded the sum of N20m as ransom.

“We have been on it since morning; the kidnappers have contacted the church and are demanding N20m,” the cleric disclosed.

Efforts to contact the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, were unsuccessful as her telephone rang out.
