During the Senate meeting of August 30 (Friday), Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. I. A. Abiona, made a passionate appeal for the ban to be lifted to allow for the conduct of elections of the student body during the 2018/2019 session.

“The Student Affairs Division will ensure that a purposeful leadership of students emerges by raising the bar of eligibility, organisation of pre-election workshop and post-election leadership retreat for winners,” he assured.

It was reported that Mikel joined the Turkish Super Lig side after leaving English club, Middlesbrough.

According to AOIFootball, Olga has threatened Mikel that she will no longer come to Turkey to visit him with her children.

The report added that Olga is not happy with the 32-year-old after he left England for Turkey, adding that the pair relationship has gone sour.

Police commission halts recruitment of 10,000 personnel

The Police Service Commission has placed the recruitment of 1o,000 personnel on hold.

In a statement on Friday, Ikechukwu Ani, spokesman of the commission, said the decision was made in order to finalise the remaining stage of the exercise.

He said the mandate of the commission to recruit personnel will be well utilised, and asked that applicants await further directives.

“The Commission wishes to put the on-going exercise on hold in order to finalize the remaining stage of the exercise. Candidates are to wait for further directives from the Commission,” he said.

Ani said the decision to place the  recruitment of Nigerians into the force ”whether as constables, cadet inspectors or cadet ASPs on hold is a constitutional responsibility of the commission”.

“The Commission will resist any attempt to ambush the on-going recruitment exercise or dilute its content. It notes that such an attempt will be an affront on the Constitution and a waste of national resources,” he said.

In 2017, Ibrahim Idris, former inspector-general of police (IGP), said the force will recruit at least 10,000 personnel annually to enhance its operations.

UN Ambassador urges Buhari to review Nigeria’s IP laws

UN Ambassador, Mr Osita Anaedu has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to review Nigeria’s Intellectual Property (IP) laws which are obsolete and are stifling the development of academic assets in Nigeria.

Anaedu made the call during a National Stakeholders meeting organised by IP First Group, with the support of the law firm of Banwo and Ighodalo in Lagos.

He observed that Nigerian politicians don’t seem to understand what intellectual property is.

According to him, intellectual property are the creations of the mind or the intellect, such as technological inventions, designs, artistic works, symbols, names and images used in business.

Mr Femi Agaba, Vice President, Intellectual Property Lawyers Association Nigeria (IPLAN) who spoke at the event said there was need for politicians to understand how intellectual property affects agriculture, especially now that the country was talking about diversifying its economy from its dependence on oil.

“Intellectual property applies to agriculture because even the production of new varieties of seedlings, the branding of rice (trademarks), the creation of new farm implements and the development of new formulas for the blending of fertilisers are all intellectual property, which need to be protected.

“And a robust intellectual property system is needed to foster an environment in which such innovations and creativity can flourish,” he said.

Agaba further called for the urgent development of an IP Policy for Nigeria, which would “chart a course towards harnessing and deriving maximum benefit from Intellectual property assets that may be available in and around our country”.

He declared that there was need for a policy guide to be able to determine how Nigeria as a country would administer IP.

He also noted that with a robust IP policy in place, all the agencies of government administering the various forms of IP would take direction from that policy, which would ensure robust IP system for 21st century Nigeria.

The IPLAN VP therefore called on President Buhari to set up an intellectual property council or at least appoint a special assistant on intellectual property to anchor the IP policy of Nigeria, just as former U.S. President Barack Obama did during his time in office.

Also speaking at the event, the Registrar of Trademarks Registry of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Shafiu Adamu Yauri noted that “IP First is an organisation set up to drive the IP narrative forward” and as one of its pioneering members, he promised to support the efforts of the organisation in helping to establish a befitting IP system for Nigeria.

“I’m here to serve,” he declared “and I promise to help correct all those mistakes that have happened over the years. And you will agree with me that we are trying to do so.
“Since I assumed office as the Registrar of Trademarks, we have cleared all the backlogs of unattended application in the office.

“What we are tackling now are the opposition cases; once we are done with that, we can beat our chest to say we have brought the Trademarks Registry up to speed as a 21st century registry in terms of its operations.”

Dr Yauri, however, noted that the laws governing the intellectual property space in Nigeria were obsolete and needed to be reviewed.

The Chairman of the NBA SBL, IP Committee, Barrister Afam Nwokedi, however, noted that more worrying problem was the proliferation of intellectual property bills at the National Assembly.

He called for the harmonisation of the plethora of IP bills that were before the National Assembly some of which had gone through First and Second Reading.

“The most important bill of all is the IPCOM bill, sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, which has gone through First and Second Reading.
“But it is unfortunate that there is politicisation of the bill owing to the tussle between the Ministry of Justice and Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment for the rights to supervise the new Commission that was proposed to be set up in the bill.

“One of the areas that need urgent amendments before we embarrass ourselves is the issue of service marks.”

He therefore called for the separation of the administrative aspect of the bill from the substantive law, so that the politics associated with the administrative part of the bill would not interfere with the passage of the substantive law.

This, he said was urgently needed to provide the required legal framework for a befitting IP system for 21st century Nigeria.

A media mogul, Mr Jamilu Ibrahim, in considering the challenges and hurdles that need to be surmounted to achieve the objectives articulated at the National IP Stakeholders meeting, charged the IP First Group, to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) which was set up by the Buhari administration to remove the bottlenecks that were constraining business processes in Nigeria.

Ibrahim said that the Council would help in removing obstacles inhibiting the establishment of an effective and efficient IP system expected to help create an environment in Nigeria where creativity and innovation can flourish.

Professor Johnson Ekpere formerly of the University of Ibadan, who was praised for his consistency in the struggle to put in place an effective IP system for over a period of 28 years, urged stakeholders not to relent on their efforts in helping to realise the objective of putting in place a robust IP system.

Ms Lara Kayode, one of the co-chairs at the event, called for the identification of IP icons and champions in Nigeria to support the initiative, while Dr Murtala Amin of the Faculty of Law of Uthman Dan Fodio University Sokoto, called on IP First Group to involve members of the academia to also support the initiative.

N1.6bn fraud: Court frees Jonathan’s ex-aide, banker

The Federal High Court in Lagos has discharged and acquitted a former Senior Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Domestic Affairs, Waripamo-Owei Dudafa, and a banker, Joseph Iwuejo, who were charged with N1.6bn fraud.

The court, in a judgment by Justice Mohammed Idris, said it found it difficult to convict the ex-presidential aide and the banker because the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission failed to prove the charges against them beyond reasonable doubts.

Justice Idris said the case of the EFCC was built on suspicion and suspicion, no matter how strong, could not be used to secure a conviction.

He held that the EFCC did not conclude an investigation before rushing to court, thereby living loopholes.

He dismissed the entire 22 counts against Dudafa and Iwuejo, discharged and acquitted them.

The defendants had been standing trial since 2016.

EFCC begins probe of OBJ’s $16bn power project, arrests 4

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday detained two top officials of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), the company which supervised execution of the $16 billion failed power projects.

The officials are Head of Finance Marvel Emefiele and Head of Compensation Eze M. C. Odigbo.
They are expected to account for the N850 million earmarked as compensation to communities where components of the power project were sited
Others in EFCC’s net are Managing Director of Pivot Engineering Mr. Richard Ayibiowu and the Managing Director of Chris Ejik Nigeria Limited Mr. Christain Ejik Imoka.

Detectives are on the trail 18 more suspects including two former governors, a former chairman of a bank and a former chairman of an airline.

About 15 more companies are also on the EFCC radar, it was learnt last night. There are fears that some of the suspects might have secretly relocated abroad.

President Muhammadu Buhari has repeatedly wondered how $16 billion was spent on power and there is no electricity generated. He subsequently ordered a probe into the expenditure.

A source in the anti-graft commission said: “The NPDHC officials are being detained by the EFCC, following their alleged involvement in bogus payment and diversion of about N850million compensation to communities where the components of the power projects were sited.

“Investigation revealed that approval was granted for the payment of N84billion to the communities where transmission lines of the power project are meant to be laid.

“Investigators discovered that there were serious issues arising from the payment of the compensation to the communities.

“Though about N50 billion compensation was said to have been paid to the communities, the contractors were said to have been prevented from working by the communities over non- payment of the same compensation which the NPDHC records claimed had been paid.

“Emefiele was said to have approved the payment of N850million as NPDHC Head of Finance while Odigbo, Head of Compensation reportedly effected the compensation to the communities. The two officials are being quizzed over the propriety of the matter.

“The Managing Director of Pivot Engineering, Mr. Richard Ayibiowu, is being detained over alleged payment of N350million to the communities. Part of LOT 8 of the power project, Ihiala /Orlu Transmission Line, was not executed by Pivot Engineering due to the alleged claim of hostility by the communities while about N350million was on record as paid to the same communities. Mr. Oba Otudeko is the chairman of Pivot Engineering.”

“The Managing Director of Chris Ejik Nigeria Limited, Mr. Christain Ejik Imoka, is being detained over controversial payment of N500million contract LOT 14, which ought to include Lekki-Ajah Transmission Line, which was not executed. But money was paid to that effect.

“The detained officials allegedly failed to honour previous invitations from the commission.”
The source said: “We have invited about 15 companies implicated in the mismanagement of funds meant for the power projects. One of the firms got four contracts but was only able to put in place 30 per cent of the construction. The firm also claimed that it imported certain materials since 2013 and lying in Onne Port without clearing.”

Mainly affected is the Ureje area, along Polytechnic road and other adjoining communities like Boom Town, Eminrin and Ijelu village, fondly called Aba Oyinbo by commuters.

The torrential rainfall started around 8pm on Tuesday and fell intermittently throughout the night until 6am on Wednesday.

A resident of the area, Mr Idowu Adaramoye, said the bridge on Ado-Ijan-Ikare road, which also linked the capital city to the Federal Polytechnic region was overrun by the flood.

He said commuters travelling along that route between that six hours had to parked their vehicles at the nearby filling stations and waited until it subsided.

The source said the flood also surged into a church and about five houses located within the vicinity of Ureje Bridge.

“Nobody could cross that bridge to the Polytechnic side or go into Ado Ekiti city. Most of the residents had to wake up and caught a glimpse of the ravaging fast-moving water”.
Also, residents of the Boom Town, Eminrin, had to stay indoors till 12 noon before they could cross Ureje stream that devastated their environment.

The Chairman of the community, Mr. Oladimeji, appealed to government to dredge the stream to lower the water to prevent recurrence of the flooding.

“This Ureje stream was dredged about three years ago, but the job was not well done and the effect is what we are feeling today.

“About four houses could have been destroyed but for communal efforts made to ensure that we concrete the same inner Ureje bridge that linked us with Oke Ila region.

“There is need for the government to do more thorough job to dredge in order to reduce the water level,” he said.

Residents of Ikere Ekiti also felt a dose of the devastation as the flood rendered many homeless while property worth millions of Naira was destroyed by the flood.

The affected areas in Ekiti are: Kajola Adun Ogbon in Oke Osun, Alade filling Station Area in Odo Oja.

Journalists who visited the area observed that many houses, livestock gardens and cars were lost.

Lagos shuts Ikoyi property over greening infraction

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday shutdown a building at 10A, Alexander Road, Ikoyi for contravening the Greening Law of the State after an unauthorized falling of trees without the appropriate permit.

The enforcement was jointly carried out by the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA). The enforcement was due to the executive directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu after the property owner refused to comply with the abatement notice earlier served him by LASPARK.

General Manager (GM), LASPARK, Mrs Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola and LASEPA GM, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe both maintained that the action became expedient to establish the need for property owners to comply with the greening provisions of the Lagos State government.

“This building was sealed off for infringing on the established law after the owner cut down trees without approval by the government. This act contravenes the provisions of the Greening Law and as such attracts legal action,” Abiola said.

She made it clear that the state government had earlier served the building owner a notice, offering him the privilege to engage the government but that his refusal to do so prompted the government to enforce compliance to serve as a deterrent to other defaulters.

She pointed out that government is committing a lot of resources for the expansion and maintenance of its greening project across the State, saying that the least she expected from anyone or institution was to support the mission and not to act contrary to the point of sabotaging its efforts.

The LASPARK boss challenged other property owners who had also violated some of the Greening provisions to promptly make necessary amendments, otherwise they should be ready to face legal action, adding that Government remained resolute in ensuring that all private and public infrastructure across the state are green compliant.

“In the face of this continuous sensitization by the Lagos State Government through LASPARK, LASEPA and other Agencies of Government, henceforth defaulters of this provision will be appropriately sanctioned without any waiver,” she declared.

On her part, the General Manager, LASEPA, Fasawe, recalled that the two agencies swung into action by visiting the property to authenticate validity of claim and surprisingly met the gate under lock and key, hence the need for this action.

She also commended the concerned citizen who alerted the government and further enjoined the public to support the greening vision of the state by serving as environmental watchdogs in the preservation of nature in the interest of all.

“The government is simply being responsive to all acts against its authority, acts that undermine its effort towards promoting environmental sustainability and economic prosperity. The benefits of preserving and maintaining trees are enormous and Lagosians should avail themselves this opportunity, by religiously protecting these trees and imbibing the culture of planting, nurturing and preserving them so as to protect mankind and mitigate other harmful effects associated with climate change,” Fasawe said.

An Abuja Federal High Court has been asked to declare Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, fugitive in the United Kingdom, UK.

The court was also asked to order the arrest and repatriation of the IPOB leader from his UK base back to Nigeria for his trial in 21 days.
The plaintiff, Donald Okonkwo, made the appeal in a suit filed by his counsel, Abiodun Sodiq, yesterday.

Okonkwo also joined the British High Commission in Nigeria, the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Attorney-General of the Federation as 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants respectively in the case.

In the suit, Okonkwo urged the court to determine the following issues: “Whether the 1st Defendant is not under obligation to repatriate the IPOB separatist leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, being a fugitive cum terrorist from the Great Britain where he has been hiding since September, 2017 under the cover of his citizenship status back to Nigeria so he can stand his trial for treasonable felony, amongst other sundry offences, pending against him before Honourable Justice (Mrs.) Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja?

Kenya makes $12m from first batch of crude oil export

Kenya exported its first-ever batch of crude oil Monday, with President Uhuru Kenyatta declaring the shipment of 200,000 barrels a “special moment” in the country’s history.

The president unfurled the Kenyan flag aboard a tanker at the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa that will be carrying the oil to Asia.

“There are special moments that mark a turning point in the destiny of our nation,” Kenyatta said at the ceremony.

“The first export of crude oil by our nation, therefore, marks a special moment in our history as a people and as a country.”

The maiden shipment was purchased for USD$12 million (10.8 million euros) by Chinese trading company ChemChina for export to Malaysia.

Kenyatta said the first attempts at finding oil in Kenya date back to 1937 but it was not until 2012 that a commercially-viable deposit was located.

This field was discovered in the South Lokichar Basin in Turkana, in Kenya’s far north, by British firm Tullow and its joint venture partners.

The company estimates the field holds 560 million barrels of oil.

Nigerians to start paying tax on online transactions from January 2020

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that Nigerians will start paying value-added tax (VAT) on both domestic and international online transactions from January 2020.

FIRS executive chairman, Babatunde Fowler made this known on Monday at the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) technical workshop in Abuja.

He, however, noted that the date of commencement of the VAT on online transactions would be subject to government’s approval.

“We have thrown it out to Nigerians. Effective from January 2020, we will ask banks to charge VAT on online transactions, both domestic and international.

“VAT remains the cash flow in most African countries, with an average VAT-to-total tax revenue rate of 31%. This is higher than the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s average of 20%.

“This statistics, therefore, is a validation of the need for us to streamline the administration of this tax with the full knowledge of its potential contributions to national budgets.

“It is, however, also bearing in mind the rights of our taxpayers,” Fowler said.

Biafra: PDP attacks Nnamdi Kanu

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has said that the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is a coward for threatening to attack Southeast Governors.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Chairman of Ebonyi State chapter of the party, Onyekachi Nwebonyi in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital on Monday, adding that the IPOB leader was only being desperate.

Nnamdi Kanu and his group had threatened to attack Igbo leaders and Southeast Governors abroad.
Reacting, PDP stated that Kanu is not a freedom fighter but a businessman out to make money from Igbo politicians and businessmen.

The party also pointed out that real freedom fighters do not run away but stay and fight to achieve their aim.

PDP’s statement added, “The threat by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB to attack the governors of the Southeast Geopolitical Zone and particularly, Ebonyi State governor, Engr. Chief David Umahi, whenever they travel abroad, is punk and cowardly”.

“It is a threat out of desperation by people who thought they could use the Biafra agenda for self-enrichment. Unfortunately, the shenanigan did not pay off on the home front, though the Igbos in the diaspora fall prey.

“IPOB is not fighting for the actualization of Biafra and the name of the organization suggests no such objective. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the group is just out to make money from Igbo politicians and businessmen.

“He had thought he would get the governors and other politicians in the Southeast to be funding his activities but that was not happening. His recent approach of attacking Igbo politicians who travel abroad arose from that unmet expectation.

“He is not genuine in his agitation. There are valiant men at home who could support him if he is genuine, but he rather chose to rely on miscreants whom he can easily deceive.

“If Nnamdi Kanu is a genuine freedom fighter, he should have taken a cue from notable freedom fighters some of who even paid the supreme price for their course.

“Nelson Mandela served 27 years in prison in his struggle to end Apartheid in South Africa. He never ran away from his country. Martin Luther King Jnr. was imprisoned 30 times in his struggle to end racial segregation in America, and even laid down his life for that course. He never ran away from his country.

“Jomo Kenyatta served 9 years in prison for his agitation for Kenya’s independence. He never ran away but stood firm to later serve Kenya 15 years as president.

“Kanu should have stayed back to press home his demand for the emancipation of the marginalized people of Biafra. That is why I call him a coward. He should also remember that the Igbos are not the only people of Biafra.

“And again, mentioning the governor of Ebonyi State for attack abroad shows that what the group wants is far from the emancipation of the Igbo people.

“It is laughable that instead of Nnamdi Kanu and the IPOB to direct their vengeance of the Operation Python Dance 2 towards President Buhari and the Nigerian Army, they ungratefully and cowardly chose to attack the very persons that saw to it that Kanu was released from prison. That is really cowardly and barbaric.

“Governor Umahi is not a governor that junkets foreign lands ignoring his people. The transformation he has given Ebonyi State clearly shows that if all the governors of the Southeast had acted in the same way over the years, the region would have been a destination of some sort by now.

“The infrastructural development going on in Ebonyi State is a clear indication that Governor Umahi does not deserve unfair treatment by any group whatsoever.

“I, therefore, call on Nnamdi Kanu to come back home and assess the performances of the Southeast governors so he would know exactly what his grievances are.”

Lagos vows to go tough on land grabbers

The Lagos State Government has vowed to go tough on land grabbers, popularly known as ‘Omonile’ who specialised in seizing people’s properties.

The government also advised all legitimate land and property owners in the State to perfect title documents as well as all other legal documents pertaining to their lands and properties, saying this would help put land grabbers at bay and ensure easy administration of justice in the event that such properties were forcefully taken.

The Coordinator of the Lagos State Special Taskforce on Land Grabbers, Mr. Owolabi Arole who spoke on Monday in Alausa, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria while reviewing the activity report of the Taskforce for first and second quarter of 2019, noted that undocumented and incomplete transactions, as well untidy property documentation made it difficult for property forcefully taken over to be retrieved through legal means.

He said: “a large chunk of the land grabbing cases the taskforce is working is fraught with issues of improper and incomplete legal documentation and such issues causes delay in getting justice for rightful owners of land.

“These issues, however, have not deterred us from carrying out our mandate and getting justice for rightful owners of land from unscrupulous element who forcibly encroach and disposes them of their property.”

He explained that the taskforce had continued to vigorously carry out its mandate to reduce to a barest minimum the activities of persons or corporate entities who used force and intimidation to dispossess or prevent any person or entity from acquiring legitimate interest and possession of property in Lagos State.

Arole noted that the task force had since inauguration received over 1,300 petitions bordering on land grabbing and related issues, treated and concluded 550 cases, made 35 arrest and presently working on 330 petitions.

While urging citizens who were victims of land grabbers whose land had been encroached upon not to take the laws into their hands, the Coordinator advised them to report such incident to the Special Taskforce on Land Grabbers who would take it up and ensure that Justice is done.

Arole warned land grabbers to desist from their illicit trade stressing that the State government will through the task force bring the full wrath of the law on anybody caught for forcibly taking another person’s land.

“State government through the Lagos State Properties Protection Law 2016 set up this task force in realisation that the activities of land grabbers over the years have caused havoc and unrest in different parts of the state, stifling commercial activities and preventing prospective investors from carrying business activities in Lagos.

“The law prohibits forceful entry and illegal occupation of landed properties, violent and fraudulent conducts in relation to Landed Properties in Lagos State and connected purposes”, he said.

He vowed that his task force would within the confines of the Lagos State Property Protection law descend on land grabbers and ensure a stop to their illicit trade.

South West states set for take-off of WNSN, new security outfit

Governors in the six Southwest states are set to launch in October a new security outfit to Be known as Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN).

The Nation reported that the governors are putting finishing touches to the inauguration of the security outfit, following the Approval in Principle given by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for the zone to establish a Joint Task Force (JTF) to tackle killings, banditry and kidnapping in the Southwest.

The governors rose from a security summit in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital in July, where they decided to defend their domain.

The Nation said that the six governors had procured the patrol vans to be used by the outfit in readiness for the launch by October.

The source added that the vehicles would be used in each state as branches of the regional outfit with a regional management team to coordinate its activities across the region.

The regional management team would ensure exchange of intelligence and sharing of experiences for maximum performance.

According to the source, the WNSN will be made up of unconventional security personnel, including local hunters and members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) as well as other related personnel.

They will work with traditional rulers and relate with the police on specific engagements, including prosecution of arrested suspects.

Their relationship with the police is also to ensure that they operate within the ambits of the law.

The WNSN members are to comb forests and monitor activities in urban neighbourhoods to support the conventional security operatives.

Insecurity heightened in the region in June and July with the incidents reaching an alarming rate on the Ibadan-Ikire-Ife Road, Ilesa-Akure Road and roads in Akoko area of Oyo, Osun and Ondo states respectively.

The fear generated by the incidents prompted the governors of Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Ogun and Ekiti states to come together to seek a regional approach to tackling the menace.

They directed the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission to organise a security summit to generate ideas on how to develop a regional blueprint to tackle the growing concern.

Thousands stranded as Nigeria suddenly closes Seme Border

A major border crossing between Nigeria and Benin Republic remained closed on Wednesday without formal notice, leaving thousands of people and vehicles stranded on both sides.

The Seme Border, the busiest land crossing in Nigeria, was shut on Tuesday after some truckloads of prohibited tramadol and codeine were intercepted in Lagos on August 16.

The closure continued on Wednesday morning, with Nigerians streaming towards their country’s border from Benin Republic hoping they would be allowed into their country.

Benin Republic traders who had entered Nigeria to supply goods in Lagos were also stranded and prevented from returning to their country.

Victims of the abrupt shutdown of West Africa’s main commerce corridor were seen fuming about their ordeal on social media Wednesday.

The Nigerian government closed the border “without any information and we have thousands of Nigerians stranded in Benin Republic trying to come into Nigeria,” Alfred Eseoghene, a used car salesman who was amongst those stranded,  reported this on Tuesday afternoon. “The military is not allowing anybody to come in or go out through the land border.”

“I came in through the bush partly because I have been working in Seme for years,” Mr Eseoghene added.

Another Nigerian traveller caught in the disruption posted a video of the hardship on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.

Cultists take over Ijebu-Ode as residents flee

There is tension in Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun State as members of Eiye and Aiye confraternities are reportedly taking turns to retaliate the killings of their members.

Residents of Ijebu-Ode were said to running helter-skelter as the cultists continue to terrorise the ancient city.

It was learnt that the superiority battle between the two groups started during last Tuesday’s Ojude-Oba Festival held at Olisa Road in Ijebu-Ode.

A young man simply identified as Hassan, who was reportedly a member of Aiye Confraternity, was said to have been killed in the evening of the festival by a member of Eiye Confraternity, who was his friend.

Hassan was allegedly killed with a “poisonous dagger” by his friend; who had been nursing a grudge against him for some time.

A resident of Ijebu-Ode, who pleaded anonymity said, “That night I was even fortunate to run for my life because, I was around that place when the crisis started.

“A guy belonging to Aiye, named Hassan was killed that night by an Eiye guy who happens to be his friend. Before they could rush the guy to hospital, he gave up.”

According to our source, members of the Aiye Confraternity retaliated Hassan’s death by killing two Eiye members before daybreak.

It was gathered that the killings had been increasing at an alarming rate as it has now become a source of worry to members of the public, who have been blaming the police for not doing enough to nip same in the bud.

On Tuesday, indigenes of Ijebu-Ode were sending messages to their loved ones through the social media to steer clear of some areas in the metropolis for fear of being killed or injured by the cultists rampaging the areas.

A copy of the message seen by our correspondent reads: “Violent Cult activities reportedly ongoing in Italapo area, Ijebu Ode with probable fatality. You are advised to exercise caution, please.”

Our source added that, “The cultists are still killing each other. As at August 19, two Aiye and one Eiye members were killed. But none have been reported dead today.

One Aiye guy killed at Oloode road in Ijebu-Ode was ‘packed up’ by the police. But the police have not been doing anything.”

Contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he would reach out to the Ijebu-Ode Area Commander for details and revert back to our correspondent.

However, he was yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.
