73 year-old Nigerian Nanny jailed in US for killing baby

Oluremi Adeleye, a 73 nanny convicted of murder in the U.S. for force-feeding a baby milk has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

According to Washington Post, the septuagenarian was found guilty of child abuse and second-degree murder by Prince George’s County Circuit Court, Judge Karen Mason.
“While I don’t find the defendant is an evil-intentioned baby slayer, I also don’t find her actions were accidental.” Mason said before handing down the sentence.

Prince George’s County prosecutors argued that the nanny unscrewed the lid of a baby bottle and poured nearly eight ounces of milk down 8-month-old Enita Salubi’s throat.

Adeleye, a native of Nigeria, testified in her own defense at her trial that she was “cup-feeding” the baby to ensure it didn’t go hungry, a custom in her home country.

She and her attorneys said that she did not mean to hurt the child and that Enita’s death was a “tragic accident.”

Adeleye had others testify in her defense, saying that cup-feeding — pouring liquid in one’s hand to feed children when they do not want to eat but need to be fed — was common in Nigeria.

“Please forgive me. I didn’t mean to kill your child,” Oluremi said in court on the day the judgement was delivered.

The child had roused the nanny from a nap, and the girl essentially drowned in milk while in Adeleye’s care in Glenarden on Oct. 24, 2016, prosecutors said at trial.

Enita’s mother, Nikia Porter, said at the sentencing that she moved from the South Side of Chicago to escape gun violence that could have put her family in danger.

“I didn’t want to lose my child to a stray bullet…. I lost her to a formula.”

Adeleye, opted for a bench trial, in which a judge weighed her fate instead of a jury.

In finding Adeleye guilty of all the charges against her, Mason said Adeleye lied to homicide detectives in recorded interviews about whether she unscrewed the cap of the bottle to feed the child.

The shifting story, Mason said, demonstrated a “consciousness of guilt.”

Shi’ites movement now terrorists organisation

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), otherwise known as “Shiites” has been declared a terrorists organisation after series of deadly protest by its members led to the death of Usman Umar, a Deputy Commissioner of police and Precious Owolabi, a Channels Television reporter.

Justice Nkeonye Maha, of the Federal High Court in Abuja, made the declaration on Friday.

The group had engaged the Nigerian police and other security agencies in several clashes over the continuous detention of its leader in Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzakky and wife.

With the order according to Punch, the court restrained any person or group of persons from participating in any form of activities involving or concerning the IMN under any name or platform in Nigeria.

A copy of the ex parte application marked FHC/ABJ/CS/876/2019, was filed in the name of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Reports say Justice Maha granted the four prayers contained in the application shortly after the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr Dayo Apata, argued the application on Friday.
The IMN was the sole respondent to the application but the group was not represented by a lawyer on Friday since it was an ex parte hearing.

It would be recalled that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was also proscribed and declared terrorists group two years ago by the Federal Government following the activities of its leader Nnamdi Kanu.

Ministerial screening: How Rivers PDP Senators disappointed Gov. Wike in N2bn plot to disqualify Amaechi – Eze

A chietain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has claimed that Senators from the State disappointed Governor Nyesom Wike after the alleged N2 billion plot to disqualify a former Governor of the State, Chibuike Amaechi, failed.

Eze stated this in a statement on Thursday where he also commended the Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan for giving Amaechi his due regard as a former two-time Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and Chairman of Nigerian Conference of Speakers’ Forum.

Eze, who served as the National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), also commended “the three Senators from Rivers State, Senator George Thompson Sekibo representing the Eastern Senatorial District; Senator Betty Apiafi representing the Rivers West senatorial district; and Senator Barinada Mpigi of Rivers South East Senatorial district for distancing themselves from the N2 billion plot by functionaries of the Rivers state government, led by Governor Nyesom Wike and Senator Magnus Abe, to oppose the nomination of Amaechi and embarrass him during the screening process.”

He said that the “Distinguished senators have shown character by their comportment on the floor of the senate and reported pre-meeting with the former minister ahead of the screening exercise. From what I gathered, the senators had a meeting with him before the screening started, which indicates that they are not part of the conspiracy being plotted by Chief Wike and former Senator Abe to embarrass their benefactor on the floor of the Senate and ultimately nullify his nomination.

“I believe that Senator Abaribe, who spoke on behalf of the Rivers caucus, suing for peace in the politics of our dear state, also deserves commendation for the role of a peacemaker he played. He showed that politics is about development, which will not come without a peaceful atmosphere. Therefore, I commend the three senators for showing solidarity to Amaechi who, by every means, is the authentic leader of politics in Rivers state and I urge Wike and Abe to emulate the three senators in order to move the State forward peacefully.

“I also urge Wike and Abe to sheath their swords and cease all instruments of media war and propaganda and allow peace to prevail in the politics of Rivers state so that collectively we can rebuild and recover the State from its present sad, parlous and pitiable condition. Like they say: peace if priceless, terror is senseless”, he said.

Eze commended the Senate President and all Senators of the 9th Assembly for exhibiting maturity and high level politics by according Amaechi his due respect and honour for all he has contributed towards the emancipation and development of Nigeria.

Eze commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his love and solidarity to the APEC leader in the South-South region of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Dr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi by renominating him as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and urged him to post him back to the Ministry of Transportation to enable him accomplish the revolution he has started in the Ministry for a better, virile and vibrant Rail system, outstanding Ports and pursuance of the best and visionary Maritime Sector in Africa.

He reassured Nigerians that the second coming of Amaechi as a Minister will enable him showcase in another level what leadership is all about.

Nigeria claims gender equality days after Buhari gave women 16 percent ministerial slot

The federal government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has reaffirmed its commitment to achieve gender equality in Nigeria.

This assurance came three days after President Muhammadu Buhari nominated only 7 women in his ministerial list which contained 43 names.

It was gathered that the Buhari’s action has been condemned by over 150 Nigerian women groups, representing different regions, ethnicities, social and political allegiances and organizations for youths and persons with disabilities.

In a letter of protest to the Senate, the women expressed dismay and utter disappointment about the male dominated nominations.
It read in part: “This list maintains and reinforces the historical exclusion of women in the country, ignores the youth and people living with disabilities and thus inhibits the critical goal of achieving meaningful, equitable and participatory national development.

“The list submitted by Mr. President reneges on the repeated campaign promises by his government and creates a crisis of confidence in the integrity of our elected political leadership.
But government insists it would continue to implement women-oriented policies, including the full declaration of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA).
Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Ifeoma Anagbogu made the commitment at the Beijing +25 Inter-Generational Dialogue on Thursday in Abuja.
The BPFA (Beijing Declaration) was adopted in 1995 with commitments to taking strategic and bold actions in 12 critical areas of concern.
The 12 critical areas include poverty, education and training, health, violence, armed conflict, economy, power and decision making.

Others are institutional mechanisms, human rights, media, environment and the girl child.
NAN quoted Anagbogu as saying that BPFA “affirms that equality between women and men is a matter of human rights and condition for social justice.”
“It is also a necessary and fundmental prerequisite for equality, development and sustainable peace.
“The BPFA remains the most visionary agenda for the empowerment of women and girls; it set out on how to remove systematic barriers that hold women back from equality in both private and public spheres,” she said.
She stated that there had been tremendous progress toward achieving gender equality and the realisation of the rights of women and girls.

Anagbogu said some of the achievements include institutional arrangements, participation of women in public and political life.
Others integration of gender and social inclusion targets in economic policies, budgets and development frameworks, initiatives to partner with men and boys in promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The official, however, listed challenges affecting the realisation of BPFA in Nigeria as gender stereotypes, social norms, cultural barriers and insufficient up-to-date gender disaggregated data.
Others are finding limitations, insecurity and non implementation and passage of some laws and policies, among others.

Nigeria loses $14 billion annually to farmers, herders clashes, Fayemi laments

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has lamented that Nigeria loses nothing less than $14 billion to the lingering farmer-herdmen annually.
Dr. Fayemi made this disclosure on Thursday while delivering a paper titled “Farmer-Herder Conflicts in Nigeria: Implications for National Security” at the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) Executive Management Course in Abuja.
The Governor called for the enactment of appropriate states and federal legislative frameworks and strategies that would help to regulate incessant cases of farmer-herder conflicts and the attendant loss of lives and properties in the country.
He also canvassed the need for effective and strategic communications of government policies on this and other national issues in order to ensure that the right messaging reach the citizenry and safe the country from avoidable crises.
Governor Fayemi stated that the scale of the challenge required that government move to unpack what has become a major threat to peaceful coexistence and food security in the country.
He noted that fatalities recorded from the farmer-herder clashes outnumber those of the devastating insurgency in the North East and had led to the loss of more lives in Nigeria than in the rest of West Africa.
Dr Fayemi who advocated for state and federal laws that would foster peaceful coexistence in spite of the nation’s diversity stated that such legislations on regulating the conduct of farmers and herders must have a human face and must help in harnessing the country’s economic and socio-cultural potentials.
This is also in addition to ensuring that law breakers do not escape punishment.
He added that political leaders must ensure that socio-cultural and political sensitivities are borne in mind while communicating policies with the citizenry in order to avoid the risk of leaving those policies to faulty interpretations and susceptible to politicization.
Dr Fayemi at the lecture which was attended by participants drawn from the security and para military agencies attending the Executive Intelligence Management Course at the institute, posited that beyond Nigeria, farmers-herders conflict had become a threat to sub-regional and continental peace and stability, in terms of devastating effects including loss of lives, livelihoods and impact on the economy.
Other devastating effects, according to him include banditry, cattle rustling, proliferation of small arms and light weapons as well as extreme violence.
He however said political leaders and policy makers have not done well in putting across the right messaging on the herder-farmer crisis.
He said: “As political and policymakers, we must be humble enough to admit that the messaging around the farmer-herder crisis, in terms of being mindful of sensitivities and the use of polarizing terminologies and concepts leaves room for improvement.
“From the evolution of the discourse on major issues such as the Anti-grazing laws which have been passed into law in Ekiti, Benue and Taraba States, to colonies, the Ruga settlement phenomenon, the ranching options, we have not done enough to properly manage the various narratives or interpretations that emerged from this problem.
Had government at all levels accorded due priority to the right messaging and perceptions in these sensitive issues, the often useful ideas proposed to resolve the problems would not gave been subjected to blatant misinterpretation and politicization.”
While emphasizing that the farmer-herder conflict has become a threat to sub-regional and continental peace and stability, Fayemi, who is Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), said a similar problem is prevalent in some West African countries, leading to the adoption of a Regional Transhumance Policy as far back as 1998.
Fayemi cautioned against demonizing one ethnic group by the others, saying that such could lead to socio-cultural implications, including increasing distrust among the ethnic groups.
He also urged the Nigerian Immigrations Service and the Nigeria Customs to be more proactive in monitoring the country’s borders, adding that the authorities of these two institutions must ensure that only foreigners who have valid travel documents are allowed to cross the Nigerian borders with livestock.
This, according to him, is the standard practice in many of the neighbouring countries.
“Transhumance across our national borders is an inevitable occurrence and has been in place even prior to the adoption of the 1978 ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and Goods. Despite this, immigration authorities need to ensure that only persons with valid travel documents can cross borders with livestock. Where state legislations are in place to regulate grazing, those from outside Nigeria must respect the laws, and must conduct themselves in accordance with the relevant legislation”, the governor said.
While making a case for ownership and inclusivity in policy design and implementation, Dr Fayemi said efforts must be made to ensure that policies work in the overall interest of the people.
He cited the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP), which according to him was well received by the citizens in view of the extensive nature of consultation that went into its policy formulation.
According to him, “In the processes leading up to the conceptualization of the NLTP, extensive consultations through town-hall meetings, workshops and specialized events consultative forums were undertaken with the main protagonists and the beneficiaries of the policy.
“This has made a difference because there is a palpable sense of ownership by the citizenry. The NLTP implementation process still has a long way to go, and is not entirely perfect. However, it is a veritable tool, which with the required political will, should help us transform the livestock sector and create wealth for our country.” He added.
Earlier, the Commandant of the Institute, Mr. Ayodele Adeleke had explained that 63 participants cutting across the military and para military agencies in Nigeria as well as one participant from Ghana were attending the Executive Management Course 12.
He said the choice of Fayemi as the guest speaker was not unconnected with the governor’s vast experience in security matters as reflected in his previous presentations at the institute.
Four members of the House of Representatives from Ekiti State, namely Hon Sola Fatoba, Hon Femi Bamisile, Hon Wunmi Ogunlola and Hon Peter Owolabi were in attendance at the lecture which was also attended by faculty members of the institute.

NYSC: 7 corps members re-mobilised for new service year in Nasarawa

Seven corps members of the 2018 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Nasarawa State, are to re-mobilise for new service year due to absconding from their Places of Primary Assignment (PPA), during the service year.

While speaking with newsmen on Thursday, just after their Passing out Parade (POP), for the 2018 Batch “B” Stream II corps members in Lafia, Hajiya Ramatu Sanda, NYSC Coordinator in Nasarawa state, made this public.

She, however, stressed that seven corps members would be re-mobilised for a new service year, while three others would face various periods of extensions for different offences committed during the service year which contravened the NYSC bye-laws.

Sandra added that the punishments would take effect after final ratification by the Nasarawa State NYSC Governing Board.

“Some corps members erred during the service year. We have seven corps members who totally absconded from service.

“Others left their places of primary assignment without permission among other offences.

“For those who absconded, they will be remobilised for a new service year. The extension of the other three will depend on the gravity of their misconducts,’’ she said.

The coordinator said the decision to punish the erring corps members was based on the recommendation of the state NYSC Disciplinary Committee.

“We have a committee on corps discipline, comprising all Assistant Directors and all heads of branches in the secretariat.

“This body looks into the cases and invites the corps members concerned to defend themselves.

“At the end, a decision is taken, strictly in accordance with our laws but the decision takes effect after the NYSC governing board has ratified it,’’ Sanda said.

Advising 2018 Batch “B” Stream II corps members passing out in Lafia, she said, “It is important that they engage themselves with the training they got during the service year to sustain themselves, instead of relying on their parents or waiting for white-collar jobs.

The NYSC coordinator went further to thank the state government for supporting NYSC, adding that 10 corps members that were passing out would be given awards for their exemplary service during the year. NAN reports.

Akeredolu’s wife leads sensitisation walk against rape

Ondo State Governor’s wife Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu on Wednesday in Akure, the state capital led women on a sensitisation walk against alarming rate of rape in the state.

She called for legislations that would ensure stiffer penalties for rapists, child abusers and predators.

The walk is coming on the heels of the high rate of rape and child defilement incidence in Ondo State, which has been a concern to Mrs. Anyanwu-Akeredolu.

The walk, which started at the palace of Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo, spanned through to Oke Eda area of the town and it was reportedly done in all other 17 local government areas of the state.
Mrs. Anyanwu-Akeredolu had a fortnight ago chaired a stakeholders’ meeting, where she frowned at how minors were being subjected to trauma in the hands of rapists and solutions were proffered on how rape could be nipped in the bud.

The First Lady, who was represented by the Commissioner for Woman Affairs, Mrs. Titilayo Adeyemi, said the women were in palace to seek the monarch’s support and inform him that the menace of rape cases was worrisome to womenfolk.

“Kabiyesi, we are here to inform the palace that the issue of rape is a great concern to everybody. We are tired of it and we are here to solicit the help of the palace.

“When a minor is raped, it may cause premature death, sickness and trauma.

“There is high tendency for rape victims to develop unnecessary hatred to men, making such victims difficult to have good homes,” she said.

She added that rape menace should be condemned by all and sundry, asking traditional institution to expose suspected rapists for proper punishment.

Oba Aladetoyinbo applauded Mrs. Ayanwu-Akeredolu for taking the initiative to stop the menace of rape.

The monarch, who condemned the menace, advocated life punishment for rapists.

He added that all morally human beings should support the initiative and contribute to it.

JUST IN: Reps pass Peace Corps Bill for recommittal

The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, unanimously passed a resolution to recommit the Nigerian Peace Corps (Establishment) Bill to the Committee of the Whole, for passage.

This means the Bill shall be passed after clause-by-clause considerations at the Committee of the Whole.

The reintroduced Bill passed First Reading in the House of Representatives July 3, 2019.
The Nigerian Peace Corps Bill, which was recently re-gazetted as HB. 17 was re-introduced and sponsored by the Chief Whip, Hon. Mohammed Tahir Monguno.
Monguno while leading a debate on the motion to re-introduce the bill yesterday, said the move to reconsider the Bill in the Committee of the Whole was in pursuant to Order 12, Rule 16 of the Standing Order of the House, which prescribed that, a Bill passed by the previous Assembly, “upon being re-gazetted or clean copies circulated, be reconsidered in the Committee of the Whole without being commenced de-novo”.

Recall that the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill, which was passed by the two Chambers of the 8th National Assembly, was not assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari for some reasons.
The bill seeks to give statutory backing to the existing Peace Corps of Nigeria, with a core mandate to “Develop, Empower and provide gainful Employment for the youths, facilitate Peace, Volunteerism, Community Services, Neighbourhood watch and Nation-building; and for other Related Matters”.

While reacting to the re-introduction of the Bill, National Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dr Dickson Akoh, on behalf of the Organisation, expressed his gratitude to the Honourable Speaker, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and the entire Members of the House of Representatives, for the decision to revisit the Bill.

Akoh while speaking in a phone chat urged members of the organisation to be patient and remain steadfast, as he is very optimistic that the Bill will see the light of the day this time around.
According to him, the main reason given by President Muhammad Buhari for not assenting the Bill has been taken care of.

Buhari under fire as Nigerians blast US for failing to name banned individuals

Some Nigerians have reacted angrily to the US Government visa restrictions on individuals responsible for undermining the Nigerian democratic process.
Their anger was based on the non-release of names of those banned. They also insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari be sanctioned.

A spokesperson of the U.S. Department of State, Ms Morgan Ortagus, in a statement on Tuesday, said the government’s action applied to those responsible for election-related violence.

Ortagus said the unidentified individuals had “operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights”.

The action, according to the spokesperson, was in fulfilment of the U.S. government’s earlier promise to consider sanctions against anti-democratic forces, including organisers of election-related violence in the country.

“In a Jan. 24 statement, the U.S. government said that we would consider consequences – including visa restrictions – for individuals responsible for undermining the Nigerian democratic process or for organising election-related violence.

“To that end, the Secretary of State is imposing visa restrictions on Nigerians believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Nigeria.
“These individuals have operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights,” she said.

The spokesperson emphasised that the restrictions were targeted at specific individuals and not directed at the Nigerian people or the newly-elected government.
She explained that the decision reflected the Department’s commitment to working with the Nigerian government in its anti-corruption crusade and efforts to strengthen democracy, accountability and respect for human rights.

In reaction to the spokesman’s announcement, Nigerians stormed her Twitter page (@statedeptspox) to express their views.

Below are some reactions:
@OrdinaryOFS: Please the main problem in Nigeria is our president, he’s incompetent, clueless and always thirsty for blood, he keeps disenfranchising citizens of their #HumanRights because they are not on the same page with him, supporting him will make him wreak more havoc.

@Obiagwu_Conrade: Buhari should be the first on that list.

@AmBestmanBuka: If I understood you correctly, you said that United States of America will help Nigeria fight and eradicate all killer deseases and will work hand in hand with HIV to see its achieved. Thank you very much, don’t mention!

@ChuksMultiP: The same Buhari you’re committed to working with, was the architect behind the insane election rigging.

@EduWaltzChuka: This update is useless if no name is released. We need names, we want it to be displayed publicly. You can’t undermine democratic process after the election and still be appointed into public office in the same Country.

@AbdulMahmud01: Names please.

@yungflamzey: How are you imposing visa restrictions on those believed to have undermined the Nigeria’s 2019 elections and be working with President Buhari at the same time? Someone that should be on the list is your ally. You joke much?

@sammygyang: Start with the tyrant Buhari because he masterminded the rigged election. Stop working with a terroris

@SomTeeOnline: If the US cared about human rights in Nigeria, they shouldn’t be working with President Buhari.

@chrisxyluv: Dear Morgan, the president himself have no respect for human right. Please start with him.

@henro006: How can you people work with the chief beneficiary of the mirage election that was conducted by a partisan electoral commission and aided by compromised security agencies?

@ObiMomoh: Buhari is Nigeria best president from inception of democracy; extend the visa ban to looters, please.

@Aminu_78: The person the U.S is committed to working with gave the greenlight for the election to be rigged in his favour, and he is not under any visa restriction.

@ThePsalms_NG: The main culprit that undermined the democratic process is the one you’re committed to working with.

@Raouc1: If you don’t ban Buhari then this is not justified.

@Arshavin02349: The United States is hypocritical for wanting to work with d No. 1 culprit that undermined d democratic process throughout #Nigeria elections & greatest violator of #HumanRights. Anyway, the United States can keep deceiving gullible Nigerians that are happy over this Tweet.

@bent21m: @MBuhari is the principal, he won the election undermined by those placed on visa restriction. @MBuhari should be part of them.

U.S. bans Nigeria’s 2019 election riggers, imposes visa restrictions

The United States (U.S.) Department has imposed visa restrictions on Nigerians who were involved in trying to or undermined democracy in the concluded 2019 presidential and parliamentary elections.

It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari won a second term in office in February in an election characterized by logistical problems, violence and killings.
The department, however, did not list the names of the individuals or say how many were affected by the visa ban, but it clearly pointed out that it was for those who undermined the process.

Morgan Ortagus, spokeswoman of the department said: “These individuals have operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights.

“The Department of State emphasises that the actions announced today are specific to certain individuals and not directed at the Nigerian people or the newly elected government,” Ortagus added.

NIPR lauds Army over appointment of spokespersons

The President, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Malam Muktar Sirajo, has lauded the Nigerian Army over compliance with professional standard in appointing its public relations officers.

Sirajo made the commendation when he led the executive members of the Institute on a visit to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that the visit was to seek the cooperation of the army on the plan of the institute to carry out compliance enforcement.

According to him, NIPR is the body that is solely mandated by the laws of this country to regulate the practice of public relations in Nigeria and set parameters of knowledge to be acquired.

“It was chartered by Decree number 16 of 1990 which is now an Act of Parliament, and part of the provisions of that law is the criminalization of the practice of public relations without license by the institute.

“The provisions that criminalises this aspect of our profession does not seem to have the requisite teeth to bite because government and the system generally does not seem to come clean in respect of that.

“But, I want to single out the Nigerian army for commendation in terms of the appointments of the spokespersons and directors of public relations.

“The Nigerian Army has substantially complied with this and that is why we have had Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade as a fellow of the institute occupying that position.

“The immediate past director too is a fellow of the institute and Col. Sagir Musa is not only a member but an aspiring fellow of the institute.

“Whenever we are with the army spokespersons, we are at home and I think that the Nigerian Army deserves the commendation and that is why we decided to come to Nigerian army first,’’ he said.

Sirajo said that the institute was ready to partner the army to address the national security issues and also to seek its support to host a planned ‘Reputation Summit’.

He also urged for the army’s partnership in organising a workshop for the army public relations officers on strategic security and conflict communications management and other mandatory professional development trainings.

In his response, Buratai said that the visit of the NIPR team was apt and timely as it came at a time when the army had discovered the missing link between it and the general public.

He pledged to collaborate and support NIPR on its programmes as well as ensuring the participation of army spokespersons in the training and courses offered by the institute.

According to Buratai, the army recognises the importance of public relations to its operations and activities.

“You will not know the impact of public relations until you have received several bashes and you discover that you are left alone but by and large, we have been working so hard.

“We appreciate the role of the Directorate of Public Relations; we had a dynamic director who really worked very hard to bring the Nigerian Army to what it is today.

“Be rest assured that the Nigerian army will partner with you fully on this workshop on strategic security and conflict communications management.

“It is very apt and timely and be rest assured that we will collaborate.

“The visit today will be a turning point between the Nigerian Army and NIPR in fostering our relationship and we will give you all the support to ensure that the law is enforced and practiced in the Nigerian army,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the NIPR team included former Director-General of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Prof. Tony Iredia and former Army spokesperson, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade.

Also on the team was the former spokesperson for Nigerian Customs Service, Mr Wale Adeniyi, who is currently a Comptroller of Customs.

Just in: Southwest Govs flay calls on Fulani residents to leave for north

Governors in the Southwest states on Friday reacted to a statement credited to the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), asking persons of Fulani extraction resident in Southern parts to return to the north.

They described the claim as most unfortunate, divisive and retrogressive.

A statement personally signed by the Forum’s Chairman and Ondo state Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu said:” With no intention to engage anyone, it is incumbent on us, as elected representatives of our people in the South West Region of the country, to denounce this divisive and retrogressive statement in the strongest terms possible.

“The Southwest Governors viewed the report with palpable trepidation and outrage, the sustained attempts to fan the ember of discord, seizing every opportunity offered by the current security challenge to undermine the unity and peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.”

Akeredolu added: “It is appalling, to assert the least, that the tragic incident, which claimed the life of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Pa Fasoranti, the leader of Afenifere, would be used by certain persons to advance the cause of parochial and prebendal politics.

“We intend to get to the root of the sad occurrence as we await the findings of security agencies on the unfortunate incident.”

The chairman said the governors and the people of the South West are working, assiduously, at the current security challenges with a view to finding lasting solutions to curtail the nefarious activities of undesirable elements bent on wrecking our collective peace.

He said:” We are not unaware of the antics of certain elements, who hope to garner political mileage from the contrived crises in virtually all parts of the country.

“We are equally convinced that this confusion serves the narrow interests of some persons.

“The country has a rich history; she has had to encounter adversities in the course of her transition to nationhood.

“She has overcome them all. This distraction will also pass. We look up to the security agencies to take cohesive steps to curtail this major challenge of insecurity which engenders hopelessness.

“We can only enjoin all citizens, on our part, to be patient and continue to cooperate with them as they combat the festering crises.

“We on our part have taken great strides with the hope that great success will be achieved.

“We however note, with discomfiture, the unpatriotic acts of some Nigerians, who will stop at nothing in their bid to undermine the Federal Government.”

The forum reiterated the commitment of the Governors and the people of the South West to the nationhood project, as they continue to address the challenges, saying “we will promote, with renewed vigour, all activities which encourage amity among our people”.

The Southwest Governors called on all persons of Fulani extraction and indeed all Nigerians from other parts of the country, resident in the South West Region, to discountenance the unpatriotic outburst of the Northern Elders Forum and other self-serving organisations of opportunists.

The Forum welcomed all Nigerians, who have legitimate reasons to be in the region, stressing the Governments and the people of the South West would protect all persons regardless of their ethnic and/or religious backgrounds.

It emphasised that only criminals would find the region not hospitable.

PDP kicks against House of Reps’ plans to shut down Edo Assembly, blasts APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the order by the House of Representatives asking the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to shut down the Edo State House of Assembly is unconstitutional.

The party in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, Thursday in Abuja also described the order as provocative, saying it has no place in a democratic dispensation.

Ologbondiyan cautioned the leadership of House of Representatives to desist from actions that violate the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and could trigger a constitutional crisis in Edo and the nation at large.

He also criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership over its inability to manage its “avarice and internal strife” playing out in Edo.

The statement read: “The PDP states that no section of the 1999 Constitution confers the House of Representatives with the powers to issue orders to a state governor or direct the shutdown of a sitting State House of Assembly.

“Whether in language or action, such is only obtainable in a military system.

“The PDP hereby invites Nigerians to note that section 11 of the 1999 Constitution, upon which the House of Representatives anchored its decision, does not in any way empower the House of Representatives to shutdown a functioning state legislature.’’

Ologbondiyan also cautioned the federal legislature to note that such imperial stance against a legislative house; a symbol of the sovereignty of the people was self-destruct.

He added that it also opened the fundamentals of the nation’s democracy to unwarranted attacks.

Ologbondiyan said that was particularly as there were already apprehensions across the country that the shutdown order was a prelude to an autocratic.

“The PDP, therefore, counsels against any arm of government overreaching itself to take actions that undermine our constitution.

“It encourages dictatorial tendencies against our institutions of democracy and the essentials of personal freedom and rights of citizens in our nation,’’ he added.

Atiku’s video evidence empty says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday described the 48 Compact Discs evidence tendered by the People Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atitku Abubakar as lacking in probative value.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that four of the video clips played at the Presidential Election Tribunal court hall includes “Count down of Osun Decides’’, a production of Channels Television with Seun Akinboloye as host.
In the above production dated Feb.8, Mr Mike Igini, Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom had talked about the readiness of the electoral body to transmit the Feb.23 general election electronically.
The second video was a clip of the postponement of the general election by INEC Chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmud.
NAN further reports that the third video was a clip of AFEX Nigeria training of INEC Ad-hoc staff on electronic result transmission.
Similarly, the briefing by the Nigerian Army authority on the status of President Muhammadu Buhari’s alleged certificate saga completed the four materials shown in court.
Chief Chris Uche, SAN, Counsel for the petitioners had led Mr Segun Showunmi, Spokesman for the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation to tender the materials before the five-man panel of justices.
During his cross-examination by Mr Yunus Usman, SAN, Counsel for INEC, Showunmi agreed that the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom was not a spokesman for the commission.
Usman also made the witness to confirm that the chairman of the electoral body only expressed the hope of the commission to transmit results of the general election electronically, but that it was actually done.
Usman was of the view that the video clips front-loaded by the witness had nothing to do with the Feb.23 general election.
Showunmi, attested to Usman’s question by saying that the four clips were events that preceded the election.
The other clip was on the president’s certificate controversy as the army confirmed that the Buhari had West African Examination Certificate with credits in English Language, History, Geography and a pass in English Literature.
Meanwhile, Dr Alex Izinyon, SAN, Counsel for Buhari had tendered a video clip dated Feb.6 where chairman of the commission hinged the possible transmission of the election electronically to the signing of a new Electoral Act.
NAN reports that drama however ensued as the petitioners’ legal team refused to allow their system to be used to play the CD.
In the circumstance, Izinyon filed an oral application for adjournment to allow his team bring their system and screen to continue with the cross examination of the witness.
Justice Mohammed Garba, went ahead to adjourn the proceedings until July 16 for continuation.
Earlier, the petitioners presented three of their witnesses, totaling about 40 of them out of the 400 that were listed to testify so far.
On their parts, Babagana Kukawa, Hon.Abana Pogu, Suleman Mohammed, Local Government Area Collation Agents for PDP had alleged over voting, vote buying, and violence disruption of the election in their various states.
When they were crossed examined, the witnesses were unable to back up their allegations with documentary evidence.
The counsel to INEC had reminded them that their signature on Forms EC8C (Results transmitted to the local government areas) were approval of the exeercise at polling units and wards level across their states. (NAN)
