Nigeria's Buhari starts a second term packed with challenges

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in on Wednesday for a second term at the helm a country struggling with a sluggish economy and a decade-long Islamist insurgency.

The 76-year-old former military leader read out his oath but made no other immediate comments at the open air ceremony in the capital Abuja.

He took 56% of votes in February's presidential election after promising to end violence in the northeast, extend welfare programs and kickstart growth with a program of road and rail construction.

But the fighting with the Islamist militants of Boko Haram and other groups has shown no sign of abating.

A separate surge of bandit attacks and other violence in the northwest has forced 20,000 refugees to flee to neighboring Niger, the U.N. refugee agency said on Tuesday.

SANWO-OLU MAKES SNAP APPOINTMENT AFTER INAUGURATION

Few hours after he was officially handed over to, incoming Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has made his first appointment.

He has appointed Tayo Ayinde as the new Chief of Staff. Ayinde was Sanwo-Olu’s Campaign Director.

Sources close to Ayinde confirmed the appointment of the former Campaign Director of Sanwo-Olu.

Many friends of Ayinde has bombarded the social media with congratulatory messages.

Independent Online reports that the out-going Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, on Tuesday officially handed over to the Governor-elect, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, ahead of his inauguration on Wednesday.

Sanwo-Olu’s emergence followed the decision of the ruling All Progressives Congress party in the state not to sponsor Ambode as its governorship candidate in the general elections.

Shortly after the handing over at the Government House, Alausa, the governor-elect told newsmen that it “was a very private formal hand over’’.

The governor-elect was accompanied by his running-mate in the election, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

Sanwo-Olu had during an interactive session with journalists few days ago given a hint on those that would make his cabinet and his plans for them.

A welder, identified as Ibraheem Olaiya, has been lynched to death for allegedly stealing iron rods belonging to the Redeemer’s University, Ede.

It was gathered that Ibraheem, son of the Amir of Zumuratu Mumini in Ede, was lynched to death by suspected Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) members who reportedly had put him under surveillance.

Ibraheem had earlier been accused of stealing iron rods.

It was gathered that Ibraheem allegedly gave up the ghost while he was being rushed to the State Hospital in Ede.

Reacting to the incident, the Head, Directorate of Public Affairs, Redeemer’s University, Ede, Mr. Adetunji Adeleye confirmed the incident but denied any link between the University and OPC members

Adeleye maintained that the institution had no link with the death of Ibraheem, adding that Redeemer’s University operated a non- violence policy.

Sanwo-olu’s inauguration: Ambode to be absent ON MAY 29, 2019

Out-going Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode says he will not be attending the formal inauguration of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, saying the new governor deserves to enjoy his historic day without having him share in the glory with him. Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode Ambode, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Habib Aruna, on Wednesday congratulated Sanwo-Olu, saying his successor should be allowed to be the star of his inauguration.

“I have already formally handed over reigns of power in the state to the new governor in a most cordial and convivial ceremony at the State House yesterday. “The formal inauguration should have Mr Sanwo-Olu as the star of the day. I don’t think that glory should be shared with him by my presence.”

Ambode said he had a quality private moment with his successor. He said he was confident that with the prayers, cooperation and collective support of all Lagosians, the new government would succeed in the excellent tradition of progressive governance which the state was known for.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has submitted his assets declaration forms to the Code of Conduct Bureau ahead of the oath-taking ceremony slated for Wednesday and in compliance with the requirement of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Research, Legal and Compliance Matters, Office of the Vice President, Dr Balkisu Saidu, submitted the completed forms to the Chairman of the CCB, Prof. Mohammed Isa, on behalf of the vice president.

Compared with the assets Prof. Osinbajo declared in 2015, the forms showed no significant changes in his assets; as there were no new real properties, shareholding or bank accounts
