Student set ablaze by attackers being forced to join cult – UNIOSUN

The management of the Osun State University, Osogbo, has said its security unit is working with the police to ensure that suspected cultists who attacked a student of the school, Victor Oke, at the Akede area of Osogbo, on Saturday, are arrested and prosecuted.

A statement by the varsity Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, in Osogbo, on Monday, explained that Oke, a part-time final-year Political Science student, was being forced to join a cult, but refused.

Adesoji said the student failed to show up for his final paper on Saturday, and when his parents were contacted, it was discovered that he had been attacked by cultists.

He said, “It was gathered that some of the eyewitnesses living in the area where the incident happened reported that they heard Oke Ademiju Victor shouting that he was not joining their cult, while they continued to hit him with cutlasses, hard stones and attempted to burn him, partially succeeding before he was eventually rescued.

“We have since been following up with the parents and it is confirmed that he was rushed to the university’s teaching hospital for treatment and later moved to an undisclosed hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.”

It was earlier reported that the victim was attacked and set ablaze by cult members and was left for dead before residents came to his rescue.

Find Bello Turji dead or alive - MURIC identifies main actor in the recent Sokoto killings

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has identified notorious North-west Nigerian banditry kingpin Bello Turji as the main actor in the recent killings in Sokoto.

In a press statement released this morning, Dec. 13, MURIC tasked the Nigerian Army to find Bello Turji dead or alive.

MURIC said it believes that Turji is the key to defeating banditry in Sokoto and Zamfara states.

The statement signed by MURIC Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, reads: "Sources close to the Sokoto branch of MURIC have reported the strong nexus between one Bello Turji, a notorious bandit, and insecurity in Sokoto and Zamfara states. He coordinates almost all attacks and he was allegedly behind the barbaric shooting and burning of passengers in a bus in Sokoto last week.

"Currently, he is believed to be somewhere in the Eastern part of Sokoto.

"He was the one who challenged the government sometime in August 2021, demanding the release of his father or else about 150 people kidnapped around Shinkafi would be slaughtered.

"More than 500 people have been killed by bandits under the leadership of Bello Turji within the last six months between Isa, Sabon Birni, Rabah and Goronyo Local Government.

"Hundreds of bandits take their inspiration from him. The Nigerian military needs to find this dangerous man.

"Nail him and bandits in Sokoto and Zamfara zone will be in disarray. A commando style operation may become necessary in order to neutralize Bello Turji. But he must be found at all cost, dead or alive."
