Man jailed for life for stabbing his teenage girlfriend 35 times during row over the paternity of their child

A drug-addict has been sentenced to life in prison in Australia with a 19-year minimum for the murder of his teenage girlfriend during a row over the paternity of their child.

27-year-old Junior Fayiah Carlos was under the influence of methylamphetamine, cannabis, sleeping pills, and alcohol when he and the 19-year-old woman had a dispute about infidelity and the baby's paternity in Mandurah, south of Perth, in December 2017.

Prosecutor Craig Astill said Ms. D'Cruz threw a bottle of alcohol at Carlos and grabbed a kitchen knife, but he managed to disarm her before turning the weapon on her and "losing control".

He stabbed her 35 times in the neck and upper body and even went to sleep and her body. Mr, Carlos was later found covered in a blanket in the bathroom, the West Australian Supreme Court heard on Thursday.

Ms. D'Cruz suffered 17 stab wounds to the face and head and another 18 injuries to her neck, shoulder and back in what was described as a "frenzied" attack.

When paramedics arrived at her home they found Ms. D'Cruz's partially decapitated body in the bathroom covered by a doona.

Carlos, who pleaded guilty to murder, was today (Oct.31) sentenced to life in prison and must serve at least 19 years behind bars before he can be eligible for parole.

The court heard he had a "substance-induced delusional disorder" at the time of the killing.

Justice Joseph McGrath described the attack as a "spontaneous act of violence" in which Carlos stabbed Ms. D'Cruz to the most vulnerable part of her body.

"The stabbing was clearly done with ferocity," he said. "The deceased should have felt safe in her home."

The court heard Carlos had a conviction for attacking a previous partner. He also had a history of assaulting Ms. D'Cruz, who had taken out a violence restraining order against him shortly before her death, but they had remained in contact.

Carlos's lawyer David Rice said Carlos was born in Sierra Leone but came to Australia when he was 12 after spending five years in a refugee camp.

Gani Adams Raised Alarm Over Secret security Recruitment

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has raised the alarm over secret recruitment of private individuals to form state security outfits. He alleged that some governors are training their personal aides as special forces.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State on Wednesday, Adams condemned such training by some governors in the South-West without the knowledge of the Inspector General of Police or himself as the chief security of Yorubaland and leader of Oodua Peoples Congress. Adams was in Ilorin for a sensitisation programme on security for members of the OPC.

Adams who described the activities of the governors as unacceptable, said he would not answer them if any security threat arose in Yorubaland.

He commended the complementary roles between the police and the OPC on security matters, especially in the South West, adding that stakeholders should support the collaboration rather than work against it.

“Do you know that some South-West governors are recruiting their political errand boys for security purposes without consulting me or the OPC anymore? And when the issue of security threats comes, they will remember to call the Aare Ona Kakanfo to come and intervene. I’m not getting salary from government, but I’ve been using my money to run this position and our money for this organisation.

“When a government politicises security, it’s doomed to fail. It’s a signal to Nigeria. If there’s any security problem in the area, they should not hold me or the IG responsible.

“The IG has done his part by partnering the organisation with antecedents. But some of our governors want to politicise security issues. It’s uncalled for and it’s unacceptable,” he said. Adams also reiterated call for restructuring of the nation, saying the only way to move Nigeria forward was through restructuring.

In 1975, at the inception of the Gen Murtala Mohammed administration Johnson was one of the two governors (along with the Brig Oluwole Rotimi) found not guilty of corruption by the three-man panel set up to investigate the various allegations of corruption amongst the State Governors.

Court orders Lagos State assembly to halt probe of Akinwunmi Ambode

The Lagos High Court in Ikeja has ordered the Lagos State House of Assembly to stop the probe of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode pending the determination of the case filed by the former governor against the Assembly.

The court adjourned the matter brought before it by Ambode, against the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa in connection with the ongoing probe of procurement of 820 buses by Ambode’s administration.

Justice Adesanya adjourned till 20th of November, 2019 for the respondents in the matter to respond to the plaintiff’s application. Adesanya had on 29th, October 2019 ordered the Speaker and some members of State House of Assembly to appear before the court after hearing a motion ex-parte moved by Ambode’s lawyer, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN).

Other defendants are the Clerk of the House, A. A. Sanni, who signed the newspaper ads, inviting Ambode to the House by 2pm; Chairman of the Ad hoc Committee set up by the House to probe the procurement, Fatai Mojeed; and members of the Committee: Gbolahan Yishawu, A. A. Yusuff, Yinka Ogundimu, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, M. L. Makinde, Kehinde Joseph, T. A. Adewale and O. S.

The lead counsel to the respondents, Adenike Oshinowo prayed the court to give them time to respond to the application because it was received late.

“We were served the notice very late yesterday and we shall be opposing the application and we are asking for a date to regularise our processes,” she said.

Following the adjournment at the instance of both counsel, Justice Adesanya, also ordered the parties to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of the case. The former Governor had instituted a suit against the Assembly to contest the constitutionality of the probe of the buses which were procured based on budgetary approval as part of the Bus Reform Project of the State Government designed to revolutionize public transportation.

According to his statement of claim before the court, Ambode said contrary to deliberate misrepresentation of facts by the lawmakers, the procurement of the 820 buses was well captured in the 2018 Appropriation Law which was duly approved by the House.

“In section 1 of the Bill, the 1st Defendant (House of Assembly) authorized the total Budget for the year 2018 to be One Trillion, Forty Six Billion, One Hundred and Twenty One Million, One Hundred and Eighty-One Thousand, Six Hundred and Eighty Naira (N1,046,121,181,680.00) comprising the sum of Three Hundred and Forty Seven Billion, Thirty-Eighty Million, Nine Hundred and Thirty-Eight Thousand, Eight-Hundred and Seventy-Two Naira (N347,038,938,872.00) only and Six Hundred and Ninety-Nine Billion, Eighty-Two Million, Two Hundred and Forty-Two Thousand, Eight Hundred and Eighty Naira (N699,082,242,808.00) only as the Recurrent and Capital Expenditures respectively.

The NDLEA Airport Commander MMIA, Garba Ahmadu said Aduni was apprehended after she developed complications and vomited two wraps resulting from irritation and stomach discomfort.

During preliminary interview, she admitted that she ingested a total of 60 wraps of cocaine. She has so far excreted 28 wraps. She coughed intermittently before vomiting and fainted in the process. .

She was promptly rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). After she was certified stable, the suspect was taken back to custody. .

She is being kept under strict observation for possible excretion of the remaining 32 wraps.”

Hycinth on the other hand said he got into the crime because someone stole his N6 million and he was desperate for cash. He further revealed that he was promised €3,000 if the trip to Frankfurt was successful.

Ahmadu said: “In the process of excretion, the suspect made the first excretion of 35 wraps of suspected hard drugs and it was observed that one of the wraps excreted was almost unwrapped.  After taking medication, he excreted a total of 93 wraps of suspected hard drugs with a total weight of 1.620kg.”

Arrest Yahoo boys and stop harassing innocent young Nigerians- President Buhari tells Police

Worried by the repeated stories of harassment from policemen shared by many young Nigerians, President Buhari has cautioned men of the Nigerian Police to stop with the indiscriminate arrest of young Nigerians in their bid to arrest `yahoo criminals.’

The President gave this word of caution when he spoke at the opening ceremony of the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Lagos on Monday October 28th.

Represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, President Buhari said that the service the police force rendered was one Nigerians could not do without as it was the closest to the grassroots.

“Recently many civil society groups have complained about the arrest of young men and women just because they look successful and are carrying laptops. Yes we must apprehend yahoo criminals but we cannot harass young men and women on the streets and in taxis, most of whom are merely going about their legitimate businesses.

“There are also cases of extra judicial killings and injuries; misuse of weapons and excessive use of force by some members of the force. This sort of conduct by a few bad police officers must stop, and it is the duty of you senior and strategic leaders of the Police force to ensure that impunity of any kind is discouraged and punished where it is found.’’ President Buhari said

The President added that the Nigeria Police force was one of the proudest national assets as it was the largest police force in Africa.

US officials carpet Donald Trump, say withdrawal of troops from Syria complicated operation that led to killing of ISIS leader al-Baghdadi

President Donald Trump has been accused of complicating the operation that led to the killing of World's Most Wanted Terrorist and Islamic State leader, Mr. al-Baghdadi following his abrupt decision to pull forces from northern Syria.

The US President was also accused of knowing that the Central Intelligence Agency and Special Operations commandos were zeroing in on the location for Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State leader as he was kept apprised of the hunt for months.

New York Times reported that Security officials said Trump's abrupt withdrawal order three weeks ago disrupted the meticulous planning underway and forced Pentagon officials to speed up the plan for the risky night raid before their ability to control troops, spies and reconnaissance aircraft disappeared with the pullout.

Two US officials also disclosed that the information about the Islamic State leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s general location which is in a village deep inside a part of northwestern Syria controlled by rival Qaida group, came following the arrest and interrogation of one of al-Baghdadi’s wives and a courier this past summer.

The CIA worked closely with Iraqi and Kurdish intelligence officials in Iraq and Syria to identify al-Baghdadi’s more precise whereabouts and put spies in place to monitor his periodic movements, allowing U.S. commandos to stage Saturday's assault in which President Donald Trump said al-Baghdadi died.

You are not a good celebrity if your life can't motivate others - Foluke Daramola

Nollywood actress, Foluke Daramola took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the lives of celebrities and how it affects others in the society.

Foluke stated that a celebrity will not always be the star of the moment no matter how good and popular they are because new stars will always arise. Advising her colleagues to live a responsible life, the actress added that a celebrity is not a good one if he/her life can't motivate others to aspire for the best they deserve.

She wrote;

"No matter how good and popular you think you are as a celebrity, you cannot always be the star of the moment. Old stars will always fizzle out someday and new ones will always arise for the gracing of the prevalent moments.

New stars are born everyday and old stars die everyday. The most important thing, however, is that one must always remain a responsible celebrity, who can impact lives positively, and one people must always look up to as a good role model for motivation to rise to their own stardom or live responsibly to achieve their set goals for life.

A celebrity is not a good celebrity, if his life cannot always motivate other people to aspire for the best they deserve from life. A celebrity does not necessarily need to impress others with his life styles and achievements always, but to inspire others also to purposeful greatness"

A former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Wednesday warned that if preventive measures were not taken, the prediction on the disintegration of Nigeria will come to pass. Jega gave the warning on Wednesday in Abuja in a keynote address he delivered at a conference on ‘20 Years of Democracy’, organised by TELL magazine.
.
It had been predicted in the build-up to the 2015 General Elections that Nigeria would disintegrate. The anticipated crisis was however averted when former President Goodluck Jonathan readily accepted his loss to President Muhammadu Buhari.
.
“The CIA thought that 2015 was the do-or-die period for Nigeria, that there would not be a Nigeria in the way you know after the 2015 General Elections. That has come and passed but I think if we do not take care, a lot of these predictions will come to pass. That is why we need to do quite a lot, much more than we have ever done in order to protect the integrity of the electoral process before 2023”, Jega said.
