A year-one Chemical Engineering student of the University of Port Harcourt identified as Olaitan Gbadamosi is reportedly dead in what many have alleged was a suicide act.

18-year-old Olaitan was found dead in her room in Aluu, one of the host communities of UNIPORT with bottles of insecticide, Sniper.

In a short video currently trending online, Olaitan was seen sobbing and making inaudible comments.

Her body has been evacuated while the Rivers State Police Command, as well as the management of the University of Port Harcourt, are yet to comment on the incident.

Senate Finally Passes 2019 Budget, Makes Increase

The Nigerian Senate, Tuesday passed the 2019 Appropriation bill. The decision of the house was sequel to the presentation of the bill by the Senate Committee on Appropriation.

The chairman of the Committee, Danjuma Goje, announced an increase in the budget to 8.91 trillion.

N10billion be provided to assist victims of Zamfara State crises and should be added to the total figures.

However, the figure is higher than what Buhari presented to the joint session of the national assembly on December 19 by N86 billion.

In his remarks, the senate president, Dr Bukola Saraki said “I want to thank our colleagues, particularly for their understanding and for us to be able to meet todays deadline in passing the Bill and thank the committee on appropriation too.

“I hope that with this Budget passed, the Executive will also ensure the full implementation of the Budget for the benefit of Nigerians as a whole”.

Nigerian man killed after being wrongly accused of kidnapping in South Africa

A 34-year-old Nigerian, Samuel Nkennaya, has been killed while another Nigerian, Chinonso Nwudo is in critical condition in a South African hospital following a mob attack.

Mr Victor Ayanfe-Oyebanjo, Secretary of Mpumalanga Province branch of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, made the disclosure in a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday.

He said that Nkennaya and Nwudo were attacked following accusations that both men kidnapped Chinonye, a six-year-old girl, who unknown to their attackers was Nwudo’s daughter.

“It all started when Nwudo took his six-year-old daughter, Chinonye, to visit Nkennaya at White River town in the evening of April 27.

“Later, Nwudo and Nkennaya proceeded to buy food for Nwudo’s daughter, Chinonye, at KFC restaurant in the area.

Ayanfe-Oyebanjo said shortly after buying the food, some bystanders raised false alarm alleging that both men kidnapped the six-year-old girl.

“Thereafter, the community did not bother to ask questions and immediately mobbed the two Nigerians.

“While they were being attacked, Nwudo kept on shouting that the girl was his daughter and pleaded that they speak to his South African wife to confirm his claim – which actually saved his life.

“The Police later intervened and called for backup to rescue the victims. Nkennaya died at the hospital on April 28, while Nwudo is in critical health condition,” he said.

Ayanfe-Oyebanjo said that a week before the incident that two South Africans were murdered for allegedly kidnapping a child in the same area.

He said a murder case had been opened at the White River Police station and pleaded to Nigerians in the province to remain calm in the wake of the unprovoked attacks.

“The incident has been reported to NUSA’s national secretariat, while the union is currently seeking redress to ensure that the culprits were brought to book,” he said.

Mr Adetola Olubajo, the President of NUSA confirmed the killing to NAN.

Speaking, the wife of Chinonso Nwudo, Mrs Katlekho Ndlovu, a South African national, also confirmed the incident to NAN on the telephone from Mpumalanga Province.

According to her, Chinonye had been traumatised by the incident and was currently undergoing counselling in an undisclosed hospital.

“They (attackers) did not bother to ask her anything and didn’t even bother to remove her from the scene before beating her dad (Nwudo) unconscious. Chinonye’s dad is in the hospital while her uncle (Nkennaya) is dead,” she said amid tears.

PDP attacks Buhari over ‘private London visit’ without transmitting power

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for travelling to the UK on a ‘private visit’ without transmitting power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The reason for the president’s trip was not disclosed by the presidency which simply said it was a ‘private visit’ and Mr Buhari would returrn on May 5.

Many observers, however, believe the president travelled to see his doctors in the UK where he has received treatment for about one year of his four years in office.

Unlike during such previous trips, Mr Buhari did not transmit power to Mr Osinbajo as required by Section 145 of the Constitution.

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s private voyage out of the country without transmitting power, as required by the constitution, is an act of dereliction, which confirms that theAll Progressives Congress (APC) and the Buhari Presidency are not interested in governance but seeks to vacate our constitutional order and foist an authoritarian system on our country,” the PDP said in a statement by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan.

Attacks by bandits, kidnappers, Boko Haram, as well as ethnic and religious crises across the country have created a state of insecurity across Nigeria.

The latest occured on Monday when motorists were attacked by armed bandits along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway. Many travellers are belived to have been kidnapped.

The victims include the chairman of the board of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Muhammad Mahmood, and his daughter. Mr Mahmood’s driver was killed in the attack.

In its Monday statement, the PDP alleged that Mr Buhari’s decision not to transmit power to Mr Osinbajo had created a vacuum that would be filled by a ‘cabal’ in the presidency.

“The import of this relegation of Section 145 is also a clear absence of a constitutional command structure which leaves our nation at the mercy of the extremely corrupt, vicious and anti-people cabal with whom President Buhari presided over the most corrupt and most incompetent administration, which wrecked our economy, divided our nation and opened her up for escalated insecurity,” it said.

While the PDP criticised Mr Buhari for not transmitting power, it was silent on the fact that Mr Buhari’s civilian predecessors, who were PDP members, also travelled out of the country often without transmitting power to their vice presidents.

Ex-Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and late Umar Yar’Adua at different times travelled outside the country without transmitting power to their vice presidents.

Cameroonian refugees take over Nigerian communities

Over ten thousand refugees have taken over all the refugee camps in Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Ogoja refugee camp was meant for four thousand refugees, but it’s being occupied by over ten thousand refugees; with most of them from Cameroon.

Speaking while receiving members of a socio cultural organisation, National Association of Sea Dogs that visited the camp to donate food items to the refugees, Mr. Hilary Agida, a staff of the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, lamented that the influx have over stretched the facilities in the camp.

He said an additional camp was created to accommodate the influx but that one too has been over flooded, thus, making the situation desperate for the state government alone to handle.

“There are two refugee camps here in Ogoja, one is in Adagom and the other at Akpakpanga and both camps have been witnessing steady influx of refugees effectively over stretching the facilities here and something must be done to address the situation before we witness a disaster here.”

Consequently, Agida said that the camps are under the United Nations supervision, which registers those coming into the camp to keep a data of how many people have so far been displaced by the violence in southern Cameroon.

He explained that the fighting between those agitating for independence for the southern part of that country and security agencies started in 2017 and that the association was moved by the plight of the refugees who are going through difficulty time.

Donating the food stuff to the refugees, the Zonal President of the National Association of Sea Dogs, Prince Joseph Besong said the donation of bags of rice, tubers of yams, garri and toiletries were to assist in the upkeep of the refugees

“These people are living without any source of income and we feel it is necessary that we should extend some assistance to them by providing them some food items and provisions for their children.”

He called on the United Nations to assist in for speedy resolution of the conflict so that the refugees can return to their homes and live peacefully and develop their country.

“Outside providing a settlement for these people, the UN should intervene and ensure a speedy resolution of the crisis so that these people can take their children home and provide them adequate education,” he appealed.

Buhari orders return of student arrested for drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia

President Buhari has asked AGF Malami to ensure Zainab Aliyu's safe return.

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to ensure the safe return of Zainab Aliyu, a student who was wrongly arrested for drugs trafficking in Saudi Arabia.

Aliyu, a student of Maitama Sule University, Kano, was arrested by Saudi authorities on December 26, 2018 for allegedly travelling with a luggage containing unlawful substance believed to be tramadol.

Zainab had travelled through the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) for Lesser Hajj with her mother, Maryam, and sister, Hajara.

A petition filed by Aliyu's family later led the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to uncover a cartel at MAKIA which specialised in planting illicit drugs in travellers' luggage.

The arrest of seven members of the cartel led to the discovery that the tramadol-bearing luggage was planted on Aliyu without her knowledge.

"Based on the investigation carried out, it has been revealed that the said Zainab Habibu Aliyu is not the owner of the second luggage tagged in her name," an NDLEA report read.

With Nigerians taking to social media to demand Aliyu's release, the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, disclosed on Monday, April 29, 2019 that the government is already working on her release, alongside that of two other people with a similar situation.

"@MBuhari has directed AGF to take necessary action. We are making good progress. She will be back, along with 2 others in same situation," she responded to a Twitter user.

The presidential aide disclosed that even though Aliyu is in detention, she has not been put on trial yet since December.

Saudi operates a very strict form of Islamic law and regularly dishes out death sentences for crimes such as homicide, rape, and armed robbery, facing backlash from many human rights organisations.

A Nigerian woman, Kudirat Afolabi, was executed in Mecca on Monday, April 1 for drugs trafficking. Three days later on April 4, another Nigerian, Wahid Somade, was arrested at Jeddah airport with about 1,138g of cocaine.

According to Dabiri-Erewa, eight Nigerians have been killed in the past few years after drug trafficking convictions in Saudi Arabia and no fewer than 20 Nigerians are currently on death row in the ultra-conservative state.

Anti-FGM campaigner who was denied NHS cancer care dies

An anti-FGM campaigner from Gambia, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer and denied NHS treatment, has died.

Podium media previously reported that the 54-year-old man known as Saloum, was denied free NHS medical treatment after he collapsed in the street last December. He died on Sunday evening after being rushed to Royal Derby hospital just hours earlier.

Friends who were with him when he died said that even in the final moments of his life he was fearful that he might once again be sent away from the hospital because he was unable to pay for his NHS treatment.

Saloum fled Gambia a decade ago after falling foul of his government for condemning the widespread practice of female genital mutilation in his country. Three-quarters of Gambian women and girls aged 15-49 have undergone FGM.

After his collapse in the street it emerged that on arrival of the UK he was subjected to labour exploitation. The Home Office was alerted and sent him a letter on 25 February 2019 stating: “There are reasonable grounds to believe that you have been a victim of modern slavery.”

After Saloum’s collapse in the street last December he was diagnosed with two brain tumours and lung cancer and was told he did not have much longer to live.

Following initial treatment he was sent away because he was not eligible for free NHS care as an undocumented migrant. After pressure from the charity Doctors of the World who argued that treatment for his cancer was urgent and immediately necessary, he was subsequently given some treatment at the hospital.

Saloum became homeless following his collapse in the street – he was previously accommodated in a place he said was unfit for human habitation by the man who subjected him to labour exploitation. His friends raised money for a bedsit for him and looked after him in shifts.

Yawurry Camara, one of the friends supporting him, was with Saloum when he died on Sunday evening. “Sal had been very distressed when he was sent away from the hospital after his initial diagnosis because he could not pay for his cancer treatment,” he said.

“Last night just before he died he became panicked and anxious and I could see he was scared he might be discharged again because he could not pay for his treatment. I knew him for a long time. He was a very brave soul the way he challenged FGM in Gambia. He had a very tough time in the UK because of the labour exploitation and never really had any time to enjoy his life.”

After the initial treatment Saloum received a bill from University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS foundation trust for £8,397 which he was unable to pay.

The letter stated: “Please be aware that should you require further treatment you will need to pay for this upfront and any care that is not immediately necessary or clinically urgent could be denied.”

Doctors of the World’s director of programmes, Lucy Jones, said: “Sal was let down by the system at every stage and Doctors of the World supported him with over 20 hours of casework to make sure he got the care he needed. Sal should never have been refused help but the current policy meant hospital doctors and the GP didn’t know what to do and were unable to get clarity from the NHS leaving him without any care.

“Unfortunately Sal’s case was not isolated; the charging system is distracting medical staff from being able to deliver essential care and causing real harm to patients.”

A spokesman for University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS foundation trust said: “We are unable to comment on the care of individual patients, due to patient confidentiality.”

Breaking: Protests hit Imo polytechnic

Hundreds of protesters, Monday, blocked the entrance to the Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo in Ohaji/Egbema local government area of Imo state.

Podium gathered that the protests kicked off at about 08:58 am at the front of the institution’s gate, by the people said to be from Ohaji/Egbema.

At the time of the protests, students, as well as staff of the institution, could not have access into the institution because the gate was locked.

Their reason, according to the protesters, was to express their disapproval of the announcement of the relocation of the institution to Ehime Mbano local government area of the state.

It should be recalled that the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, through his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, recently made public a press statement, that the Imo Poly, has been relocated to Ehime Mbano.

However, some of the protesters who called on Vanguard said that they would continue the protest until the government listened to them.

Buhari’s UK trip: Presidency speaks on president failing to notify NASS, hand over to Osinbajo

The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, has insisted that his principal can perform his duty from anywhere in the world.

Shehu stated this in response to a claim made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that Buhari did not write to the National Assembly, to inform them of his trip to the United Kingdom.

Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the PDP’s Deputy National Chairman, Yemi Akinwunmi, said the President ought to have notified the lawmakers, indicating his mission abroad and transferring power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

In response, Shehu said: “The President didn’t make a mistake by taking off without writing a letter to the National Assembly. The Constitution says 21 days is the back off point. That is where infringement is caused.

“But as it is now, there is no Constitutional or legal infraction that has happened. So the President is doing his work from wherever he is. Yes, it is right that the President can operate anywhere he is. If you are a Permanent Secretary and the President calls you from Abidjan and says you go and repair that road, are you going to tell him that Mr. President you are not a Nigerian in Abidjan, you are not going to do the work?

“Do you think you will have your job waiting for you the next day? These are matters of common sense,” he stated.

Buhari is expected to spend 10 days in the UK and return on May 5.

EFCC arraigns Governor-elect, Bala Mohammed for bribe-taking

The charges marked CR/177/17 border on accepting gratification and acquisition of landed property.

Specifically, the former FCT minister is charged with accepting gratification in the form of a house valued at N550 million on No 2599 and 2600 Cadastral Zone, AO4 Asokoro District, Abuja, from Aso Savings and Loans Plc in 2014.

The commission, through its prosecuting counsel Mr. Wahab Shittu, said the alleged gratification was accepted as reward by Mohammed “for performing your official duties”.

The alleged offence, according to the commission, is contrary to Section 18 (b) of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000 and punishable under Section 18 (d).

He is also accused of making a false statement to an EFCC investigating officer, Ishaya Dauda, that he acquired the Cadastral Zone property through a mortgage facility from Aso Savings and Loans.

Mohammed is also accused of failing to make full disclosure of his property on 54, Mike Akhigbe Street, Jabi, Abuja in the course of filing his asset declaration form at the EFCC.

The commission said the offence is contrary to Section 27 (3) (a) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act 2004 and punishable under Section 27 (3) (c).

The prosecution also accused Mohammed of failing to declare a property on Agwan Sarki Kaduna in Kaduna State.

The anti-graft agency also said that the governor-elect made a false declaration that a property on CITEC Kwara House 5, AP Street, Mbora, Abuja belongs to him.

The commission said the property actually belongs to Abubakar Abdu Mohammed.

The agency also accused the governor-elect of using his office in 2014 to confer corrupt and undue advantage upon his associates by allocating four numbers of fully detached duplexes and eleven numbers semi-detached duplexes valued at N314million only through the Presidential Tax Force on Sale of Government Houses to them…”

The alleged offence contravenes Section 19 of the ICPC Act 2000.

Strikes: Buhari tackles ASUU

President Muhammadu Buhari has said industrial actions by the Academic Staff Union of Universities are inimical to the health and progress of the higher institutions in Nigeria.

According to the President, the action wasworrisome and disheartening.e stated this at the 41st convocation ceremony of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, at the weekend.

“It is only when there is peace and stability, that government is able to consolidate the gains and successes recorded in the advancement of higher education in this country,” he said.

Buhari was represented by the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Universities Commission, Prof. Abubakar Rashid.

The President noted that industrial actions cause loss of time in learning hours by young men and women; in their quest to graduate and join the nation-building.

“I am appealing to leadership and rank and file of all Universities-based unions to be more sensitive in their pursuit of welfare and other demands in the University,” he added.

Buhari said that since assumption of office, his administration has accorded and continued to invest substantially in the education sector.

He said despite finance challenges, his government had not relented in its determination to ensure that education was revitalised to gain access to global civilization in the twenty-first century.
